The Fool: The Wild Unknown Tarot Card Meanings

As the deck’s creator, Kim Krans states: there are no rights or wrongs, only mirrors for reflection. The meaning of The Fool in The Wild Unknown Tarot is for our own interpretations. From my analysis, take with you only what feels right! You can view my analysis of other cards in The Wild Unknown Tarot here.

The Fool is one of my favourite cards in the deck, and it isn’t difficult to see why! This newborn chick is full of young, vibrant energy. He is curious, fearless and ready to take on the world with a spring in his step! Will he fall? Absolutely! But he’s more than willing to take the risk and trust the process. He’s embarking on a whole new journey. Before he begins his journey through the major arcana, he sees the world with youthful innocence and exuberance: a place full of joy, adventure and endless possibilities.

Having experienced no setbacks as the young chick he is, he has no fears, no insecurities, no self-imposed limits. Nothing will hold him back as he takes his first step into the journey of life.

Imagery and Symbolic Meaning

The vibrant energy of this young chick is mirrored brilliantly by the shades of yellow and orange. These colours have connotations of happiness, energy, fun and enthusiasm. We associate these colours with the sun itself, vibrancy and life, mirroring the pure zest for life which the Fool so boldly represents. This setting could not be more appropriate for this joyful young chick taking his first steps into the world.

The Fool The Wild Unknown Tarot

The use of horizontal lines suggests calmness and stability. When we’re horizontal, we’re either relaxed or asleep! The presence of horizontal lines in this card and many others in the Wild Unknown series gives an air of peacefulness and ease, positive and free-flowing energy. The Fool is most certainly at ease with himself, his surroundings and the unknown path ahead. SIDENOTE: You’ll notice that the cards most associated with turmoil in this deck feature vertical lines. This stark contrast speaks boldly of the different energies between the cards.

The stripes of colour grow steadily darker towards the bottom of this card, representing the rising sun on a fresh spring morning. The world and the future look bright. The darkness below does not phase him, and he is ready to take a leap of faith into the unknown.

A spring chick is the perfect creature to represent the Fool. He exudes innocence, naivety and bounds of enthusiasm. He’s ready to take that leap! And of course, he does so with a spring in his step. He is care-free and is bursting with new life. This is further portrayed by the blossoming flowers on the branch where he stands. Notice that these are coloured the same simple white of the chick himself. White represents purity and freshness. We also can’t overlook the significance of the meaning behind a blank slate: a new beginning and the opportunity for a fresh start.

Meaning of The Fool: The Wild Unknown Tarot Card in a Reading

The Fool is all about beginnings. A brand new cycle. It can also follow the end of a chapter. In a reading, the Fool often asks you to take a bold leap of faith and trust the process.

Others may try to cross you: be ready to be called a ‘fool’. Don’t let others, your thoughts, fears and past experiences hold you back. Be fearless like the Fool. You have the opportunity for a brand new start, and it looks promising! Trust in your abilities to take this new journey on with full force. Believe in yourself. This is your journey, and no one else can take that leap.

The card can also signal a need for joy, youthful energy and enthusiasm. The Fool represents tuning into your instincts, reconnecting with your inner child and your zest for life. The world is full of opportunities, and a door has opened for you. The universe is screaming at you to go (not just walk, but LEAP!) through that door. There will be obstacles, but don’t allow your apprehensiveness to get the better of you! Sometimes a fun and care-free approach is what is needed! Embrace the adventure ahead. Be bold like the young, fearless chick taking his very first step into The Wild Unknown.
